Google AI Pro Free for Students: Claim by Dec 31, Card Needed
Google AI Pro free for students: eligible US students get a year if they claim by 31 December 2026. See the catch, how to claim and how to cancel.

A free year of a $19.99-a-month AI plan sounds like an easy yes. The one line of fine print that decides whether it stays free: Google takes a payment method up front and bills you automatically when the year ends, unless you cancel first.
Here's who qualifies for Google AI Pro free for students, how to claim it before the deadline, and how to cancel it before you're charged. I haven't claimed the offer myself. Everything below comes from Google's own offer page, terms, announcement and help pages, checked on 13 October 2026.
Quick answer: Eligible US college students aged 18 or over can get Google AI Pro free for 12 months if they redeem by 31 December 2026. You verify through SheerID and add a payment method. Google then charges $19.99 a month unless you cancel first. Students outside the US are offered the cheaper AI Plus instead.
What is the Google AI Pro student offer, and when does it end?
Google announced on 19 August 2026 that US students can get one year of Google AI Pro free, normally listed at $19.99 a month. Google's student page says it includes 4x higher Gemini usage limits and 5 TB of storage.
The deadline is the part to remember. Google's offer terms say it must be redeemed by 31 December 2026, and the 12 months count from the day you redeem. As of today that's 79 days away.
The catch: an earlier set of Google student terms carried an April 30, 2026 deadline. The current terms say 31 December, so ignore any page quoting April.
Who qualifies for Google AI Pro free for students?
- You're 18 or older and enrolled at an eligible higher education institution.
- Google's student page says AI Pro is for eligible US college students.
- You can pass student verification through SheerID, a verification service, with a school email address.
- You have a personal Google Account and a Google Payments account with a qualifying payment method.
- Students whose 2025 AI Pro student trial has expired can qualify, according to the same page.
The catch: the terms exclude family group members, enterprise purchasers, discounted Pixel bundle subscribers, people with Google One through a third party such as Google Fi, and supervised accounts. They also say the offer isn't available on school-issued Workspace for Education accounts, so use a personal account. Google decides eligibility at its sole discretion.
What if you study outside the US?
Google says students outside the US get one year of Google AI Plus free, not Pro. It covers more than 140 markets, with exclusions including Canada, Hong Kong, Macau, Albania, Bolivia and Tunisia. After the year, AI Plus is listed at $4.99 a month or the local equivalent.
How do you claim the free year?
- Check your account. Sign in with a personal Google Account, not one issued by your school.
- Start from Google's student page. Click Claim Free Student Plan.
- Verify your student status. When asked, verify through SheerID with your school email.
- Add a payment method. Google requires a valid one at sign-up.
- Read the renewal line before you confirm. It shows the price and date that billing starts.
- Set the cancel reminder immediately. More on that below.
What is the catch with the free year?
- A card is required. A valid form of payment is needed at sign-up, even though nothing is due on day one.
- It renews automatically. Unless you cancel, Google AI Pro charges $19.99 a month after the free period. The terms say your payment method is billed the standard monthly price from the day the Offer Period ends.
- Limits can change. The terms say usage limits may be lower than for paid members and can change without notice.
- You may have to prove it again. Google's student page says eligibility must be verified each year to keep access. Its help page adds that if you don't reverify, you lose the offer and may be charged the regular price.
- Storage can trap you. If you cancel while over your storage limit, you must delete files or buy a membership before you can store anything new.
How do you cancel before you're charged?
Cancel before the Offer Period ends. That's the rule in Google's terms, so a reminder is your real safeguard.
- Set a calendar alert for 30 days and again for two days before your 12 months end. Count from the day you redeem, and confirm the exact date on your Google One page.
- Go to gemini.google.com and click Settings & help at the bottom.
- Click Manage subscription, then Cancel membership, then Cancel.
- Keep the confirmation email. If your plan page still shows renewal, our guide to cancelling a free trial has a script and a dispute route.
Google's help page lists those cancel steps, but screens change, so follow what you see.
What happens after the free year?
- If you do nothing: Google bills the standard monthly price for your plan. The student page puts AI Pro at $19.99 a month.
- If you cancel: Google's help page says you lose the Pro features in the Gemini app, the expanded storage and Gemini in Gmail and Docs when the plan ends.
- If you cancel early: the terms say your membership may stay active until the period ends, so cancelling right after you claim may not cost you the year.
Not sure you need more than the free tier? Our guide to Gemini Notebook covers a Google tool with a free plan, and our free student software roundup has other perks to claim first.
My take and next step
A year of Google AI Pro free for students is a decent deal if you'll use the higher limits and the storage. My pick: claim it, then set the cancel reminder before you close the tab. Skip this if: you won't remember to cancel, or you only need the occasional chatbot answer.
Next step: check eligibility on Google's student page, claim before 31 December and put the end date in your calendar. More offers like this are in the Rewards, Trials & Digital Perks hub.
Last checked: 13 October 2026, against Google's offer page, terms, announcement and help pages. Offers change, so confirm the details on the claim screen.
Frequently asked questions
Can I still claim if I had a student trial last year?
Possibly. Google's student page says new users and students whose 2025 AI Pro trial has expired can qualify. Eligibility still depends on passing verification and meeting the terms, and Google decides at its sole discretion, so check the claim screen.
I'm on a family plan. Can I still claim?
Not while you're in the group. Google's help page says family group members are excluded unless they leave their shared plan first. Think about the other members before you leave, because they may lose shared benefits.
Is the offer only for US students?
AI Pro is, according to Google's student page and announcement. Students elsewhere are offered a free year of AI Plus in supported markets. Check your country on the offer page before you start, because exclusions apply.
